Indie! tells the journey of filmmaker David Cox and his quest to make a film in rural Missouri. Cox was a college graduate with no job prospects going into the movie. Life dealt its harshest card; it is a choice between two options that every person must decide between. Would Cox pursue what he was supposed to (a traditional job) or was he going to pursue the thing he had always loved (film). A life-long film fan, Cox decided to set his own course and not wait for an opportunity to be given. With no money in his pocket and no experience under his belt, Cox wrote, produced, directed, and edited a film entirely on his own. Several obstacles fall within his path, but with perseverance and on-the-go thinking, he and his crew of actors were able to overcome the odds in order to accomplish their one shared goal: finish the film. Indie! details Coxs entire journey, from writing the script, casting the actors, filming the movie, undergoing post-production elements, and the screening of the films premiere. It contains the original journal entries written by the director after each day of shooting, showing both the good and bad elements of producing a film. Also within Indie! are preproduction documents that show the limited preparation going into the filming of Student Loaners. Each document within showcases the essential elements to know if a person were to go out and shoot a similarly-styled independent film. Cox may have been rudimentary in his first attempt at filmmaking, but he did not approach it without a sense of seriousness and love. Overall, the story might be considered a how to guide. In actuality, it might be most suited as a how not to guide. Coxs quest was one of complete guerilla-style filmmaking. At times, triumphs were encountered, such as gaining permission to film at his favorite drive-in movie theater. At the same time, Cox often finds his film in jeopardy of completion, whether it is in bypassing permission to film in certain locales or in the discovery during picture editing that his film equipment was perhaps not up to par. One can discover what the independent spirit can accomplish when it is most tested. Indie! is a story of personal triumph amidst the odds. Filmmaking is a difficult endeavor; it is even harder when it is done completely outside of the official filmmaking circles.
